Burt Bacharach was born in Kansas City and raised in New York City. His mother was an amateur songwriter and encouraged him to learn piano. His composition teachers included Darius Milhaud, who he considered his greatest influence. During his studies, he learned about jazz harmony which later became important in his songwriting. Although his family was Jewish, he did not practice the religion and was more influenced by Catholic kids growing up.
