He went to Stanford University and studied electrical engineering. Mohan is married to Hema Sareen Mohan, who has worked in non-profit and public welfare sectors for 20 years. They got married while he was working for DoubleClick in New York.
Mohan worked at Accenture and then joined a startup called Net Gravity. The startup was acquired by DoubleClick, where Mohan became a key figure in the company. He went to pursue an MBA at Stanford, but returned to become the vice president of business operations at DoubleClick. Together with David Rosenblatt, they devised a plan to make DoubleClick a company vested in advertising exchange, core ad technology, and an extensive ad network. The plan was approved, and Google acquired DoubleClick for US$3.1 Billion. Mohan played a significant role in the integration process and formally joined Google in 2007. He was senior vice president of display and video ads before being moved to YouTube.

Mohan was hired as the Chief Product Officer of YouTube in 2015. He played a major role in the development of new features such as YouTube Music, YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, and YouTube Shorts. He also worked to combat extremist content and built a strong product and UX team. On February 16, 2023, he became the CEO of YouTube after the previous CEO resigned. Some people are worried about his past support for NFTs and his decisions to remove the dislike counter and unpopular programs on the site.
