Amazon’s fantasy TV series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel, is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth and depicts major events from that time period. The show is produced by Amazon Studios in association with New Line Cinema and the Tolkien Estate, and is run by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Amazon committed to multiple seasons in November 2017, and a second season was ordered in November 2019. Filming for the second season started in the UK in October 2022, with many members of the international cast from the first season returning, as well as composer Bear McCreary.

An eight-episode season will be released on Prime Video. The showrunners will work on it for another couple of years, and it won’t be released in 2023. The series is expected to be ready within 24 months and likely released in 2024, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
